What is Bongo?

We’re creating fun and simple e-mail & calendaring software. We want our inboxes to be usable again: e-mail should be a useful tool, not a productivity killer. We want to be able to use our calendars to organise our lives, and we want other people to be able to interact with us through it whether they use Bongo or not.

Although Bongo is a young project, the software itself has a long pedigree and we are simply amongst the latest custodians. But while the core code isn’t new, the ideas we have and the direction we’re taking are. We’re not trying to create a “groupware” system to compete with well-known proprietary systems, or create an “enterprise platform” which encompasses everything from document management to project planning.

Best of all, Bongo is free (as in “freedom”) software developed by an open community: we pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming, and we see our project as being complementary to similar community projects.

Its user interface and functionality are similar to Microsoft Outlook. Features include iCalendar support, full-text indexing of all incoming mail, powerful email filters writable in Scheme,^[1] and a “Search Folders” feature (i.e., saved searches that look like normal mail folders).

Evolution can be connected to all versions of Microsoft Exchange Server except Exchange 2007 using their web interfaces and an Evolution add-on formerly called Ximian Connector. Using gnome-pilot, it may be synchronized with Palm Pilot devices, and OpenSync enables it to be synchronized with mobile phones and other PDAs.

The company was purchased by Yahoo! in September 2007.^[1] The software consists of both client and server components. Two versions of Zimbra are available: an open-source version, and a commercially supported version (“Zimbra Network”) with closed-source components. These software versions are available from Zimbra for download and independent use, from Zimbra-authorized partners, and included with service from a Zimbra-authorized hosting provider.

The ZCS Web Client is a full-featured collaboration suite that supports email and group calendars using an Ajax web interface that enables tool tips, draggable items, and right-click menus in the UI. Also included are advanced searching capabilities and date relations. Online document authoring, “Zimlet” mashups and a full administration UI are also included. It is written using the Zimbra Ajax Toolkit.

The ZCS Server uses several open source projects (see the section, Included open source projects). It exposes a SOAP application programming interface to all its functionality and also is an IMAP and POP3 server. The server runs on many distributions of Linux as well as on Mac OS X.

ZCS is compatible with proprietary clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail, both through proprietary connectors, as well as the open-source Novell Evolution, so that mail, contacts, and calendar items can be synchronised from these to the ZCS server. Zimbra also provides native two-way sync to many mobile devices (Nokia Eseries, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, iPhone with 2.0 software).

Amaya is a Web editor, i.e. a tool used to create and update documents directly on the Web. Browsing features are seamlessly integrated with the editing and remote access features in a uniform environment. This follows the original vision of the Web as a space for collaboration and not just a one-way publishing medium.

Work on Amaya started at W3C in 1996 to showcase Web technologies in a fully-featured Web client. The main motivation for developing Amaya was to provide a framework that can integrate as many W3C technologies as possible. It is used to demonstrate these technologies in action while taking advantage of their combination in a single, consistent environment.

Amaya started as an HTML + CSS style sheets editor. Since that time it was extended to support XML and an increasing number of XML applications such as the XHTML family, MathML, and SVG. It allows all those vocabularies to be edited simultaneously in compound documents.
